The West Virginia Youth Science Camp is a two-week residential summer science education program, located at the Cedar Lakes Conference Center near Ripley, WV.  This program, made possible through a partnership between the National Youth Science Foundation and the West Virginia Department of Education, honors two outstanding high school students from every county in West Virginia.  Students are challenged academically in exciting lectures and hands-on studies, and have voluntary opportunities to participate in an outdoor adventure program, gain a new appreciation for the great outdoors, and establish friendships that last a lifetime.

Cost

The WVYSC is an all-expenses-paid program, including academic and recreational programming, lodging and meals.  The National Youth Science Foundation does not cover incidental expenses or the delegates’ travel to and from the camp in Ripley, West Virginia.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be between freshman and sophomore year of high school from July 15, 2012 to July 28, 2012;
  • Must demonstrate superior academic proficiency, including recognition in mathematics and/or the sciences;
  • Must demonstrate an application of leadership abilities and social maturity through involvement in both school and community activities;
  • Must demonstrate skills and achievements outside the realm of science and outside the realm of academic pursuits; and
  • Must demonstrate a curiosity and an eagerness to explore many and varied topics.

Application Process

The West Virginia State Department of Education invites the selection coordinators of every county to select two delegates to attend the WVYSC as his/her county’s delegation.  Individual counties coordinate the selection of their own delegates following guidelines established and published by the National Youth Science Foundation and the West Virginia Department of Education. Delegates must participate in the entire WVYSC program.
